Environmental Factors in Petroleum and Mining

In recent years, there has been increased interest from industry, environmental groups and government regulators regarding potential impacts to the environment and health effects to the general public from exploration and production activities. At S&T, researchers investigate the causes, implications and potential solutions to these environmental issues. Active research projects include water resources and contaminant transport processes related to produced waters and acid rock drainage. S&T is also developing technologies to limit the volumes of produced waters. Other research focuses on the health effects of unconventional resource development, including natural gas compressor leakage, flaring activities and wellbore integrity.
